Interesting discussion here - and great words for our favorite - Miranda Bailey. She's always in charge and with a big heart she only shows when "appropriate".

Overall the show seems fair on gender. We monitor shows for cast compostion and find most episodes with a decent gender balance. From our point of view, it's people of size who don't get fair representation.

Miranda's pretty much our only hero and she rarely gets a major role - we can only hope.

Bricolage: "Artwork Album
In line with our April theme, we've posted some of the original artwork found on http://genderpopculture.blogspot.com/2007/03/self-portraits-in-consumer-capitalism-6.html under Photos. The theme was for the artists to create consumption self portraits using magazine cutouts and collage techniques. Enjoy!

Darling C.:
This is an interesting post. However, I'm curious about what you think about the questions posed at the end of the article to which you linked. Do you think that ads are a major cause of women's own physical anxiety? It's easy to say that it is advertisers who make women self-conscious, but remember that at the end of the day, an advertiser will do what sells. So, what came first, the demeaning ad, or the consumers responding to the ad?

The interesting thing about Dove is that the company seems to be in a contradiction. It is a company that sells beauty (personal) products, but it is seemingly telling women not to worry about beauty. How can that be? It's like a car company telling people they should buy bicycles. So what is Dove doing?

I think that, like studies done on All in the Family, half the audience recognizes it as satire and laughs at Archie/Peter Griffin, while the other half laughs with him, viewing his as similar to themselves. So it could be argued to further sexism and racism. There's lots of research on that old show if you're interested here and here.

One think I do prefer about South Park, though, is the equity in some of the relationships of the parents. I'm getting tired of the very standard stupid childish dad with a tolerant wife who mothers her husband - like in Family Guy, Everyone Loves Raymond, Simpsons, etc. South Park has some pretty weird characters, but at least the parents don't fall into that same boring stereotype.

How cool is this? He is still sweet after being ridiculed on American Idol. Take that, perpetuators of the 'b*tchy-gay-man' stereotype! I hope he actually comments

Hey Ian,

I am an avid viewer of American Idol, and I am also analyzing the show this season for a course on Gender and Pop Culture that I'm taking. I'm I'm looking at AI for gender issues and queer representation. I hate how sexual minorities, if they are even showed (which is rarely the case), are always portrayed as something to make fun of.

I feel like the producers of American Idol used you to perpetuate gay stereotypes, and I admire you for having the guts to actually go audition (something I'm still trying to work up the nerve to do).

If you're at all interested, my blog is http://agpopculture.blogspot.com and it would be really cool if you responded to my post about you.

YOU ARE FABULOUS, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
